Upon first glance, the works by Sven Fritz, Leon Manoloudakis and Lukas Schmenger seem to highly differ, however there is one bounding element - they all have a disposition to conceal, there is something lost or hidden. This perhaps is an intellectual discourse pertaining to abstract art in general, but in each artists’s practice, absence is the precise subject. To cover up or to remove is an integral technique.
Sven Fritz bluntly omits parts of his images and subsequently creates new traces beyond recognition. Painstakingly, Leon Manoloudakis draws layer upon layer of graphite, only afterwards, to erase parts of the thick surface. Lukas Schmenger paints portraits and sculpts masks, that appear to be works in progress or the fantastic structure of the inside of our heads. It is these gaps that exist in all of the artists's works, that form a crucial component of their art making.
Yes, all three artists have their very own pictorial language. However, it is this dialogue between their visual systems, that is the productive tension of the exhibition, and also shows how diversely one can pay hommage to vacancy.
