Frank Eickhoff, untitled (Medieval Tucholskystraße 37), 2018, digital animation

After 9 months the collective frontviews will leave the venue Remise at Tucholsky Straße 37 in Berlin Mitte. Having offered a dynamic exhibition program over the last months, we are really amazed to present »Self-Driving Artist« - a solo presentation by Frank Eickhoff, as the final event in this location. The title is not only close related to the partly automated working procedures of the artist, but also can be read as the basic impulse of our collective, cultural activities.
Eickhoff will show a whole new body of digital-generated works, that are based on a self-scripted search engine for imaged related data in the world wide web. Being fascinated by the unboundedness of image, data and connection as a limitless source of creation in the internet, the artist develops fluent installations and fixed images, that serve as interfaces between algorithms and the human perception and explore unknown terrains of the web at the same time.

Some quick thoughts about
»Self-Driving Artist«

This exhibition is like an onion.

A building (the Remise) behind a building (the Tucholskystraße).

A building behind a painting, defining an interspace.

A room (video installation) in a room.

A virtual space (medieval landscape) in a real space.

For a couple of years now I experiment with generarted images found on the internet.
If the material on the internet is unlimited available, then the ouput format is also unlimited.

For that practice I use custom search engines to retrieve data based on search requests and custom software to generate the image. What parts of the process should be automated and what decisions should be left to the artist?

Between 2008 and 2010 I developed a lighting technique that projects light that is shaped like the real object in front of the camera.
By superimposing a virtual model on an object a third object emerges. In relation to Augmented Reality I called this principle Augmented Photography.
