Philipp Eberle & Marie von Heyl, »Haute Kantár«, exhibition view

»HAUTE KANTÁR« is a collaboration between jewellery designer Philipp Eberle and artist Marie von Heyl.
The project was born out of a mutual interest in the respective thought and working processes underlying the two disciplines. While design is goal-orientated, art remains noncommittal regarding its social and cultural applicability.
»HAUTE KANTÁR« combines everyday objects and jewellery into strange hybrids of abundance and restriction. Confronted with this work, our understanding of jewellery as mere adornment is challenged by the demand to make a sacrifice: wearing a piece of this collection means to temporarily lose at least one of the five senses. As both centre of subjective experience and object to the gaze of the other the human body is simultaneously acknowledged and impaired.
Classical pearls attached to a set of ear plugs, earrings worn with a mouth piece or a mask that mutes and blinds at the same time — these pieces refuse to step into the background and force us to adjust the way we communicate and make sense of the world.
